Wharf Layout

This is one of my other layout designs, a river or canal wharf, which fits on a 4' long baseboard and thus on to my workbench. If I used a slightly longer board, I could fit a fiddle yard on the end but as it stands I'd be using a removable cassette stile extension. The original design above would have a siding at the left hand front which would project out over the water on wooden pilings, perhaps as a mineral or coal drop for barges or narrow boats, depending on the setting.

If I omit the siding right at the front, as shown in the second plan, it squeezes onto a 12'' wide width but it's a bit tight, so I would probably add another few inches. This would be a GWR layout with a couple of pannier tanks and a private owner industrial loco of some sort, perhaps one of the Bachmann Thomas the Tank Engine 0-4-0's. The goods traffic would be mixed, with a typical train of three to four wagons or vans, so lots of shunting backwards and forwards to get them into the right places.

  1. Looks interesting. Water adds a nice touch to a layout.
