Wharf Layout Ideas

I've been playing around with a combination of the SCARM software and MS Paint to develop some potential plans for a compact industrial layout. I've tried to use only the sectional track elements that I already have in order to avoid buying more track and to keep the whole thing down to a reasonable size. This is roughly 4' x 1' although a few inches have been added on to fit things in.

At the moment, I have been working on an idea for a small wharf or riverside harbour layout, designed for shunting and goods train operation, although there's no reason why the same track plan couldn't be used for a small rural branch line terminus. The layout has a passing loop to make shunting feasible and a series of short sidings into which the wagons can be sorted.

The idea would be to have trains entering from the fiddle yard off the right hand side of the layout, hidden by some industrial waterfront buildings, with a mix of wagons to be shunted to the various sidings. At the back of the layout the run around loop also passes through a low relief warehouse for off loading, while at the far left hand corner there will be some coal or mineral ore drops for loading barges.

It's very much a working design at the moment and I may well do something completely different but it's a good start. I have been encouraged by the discovery of the Scalescenes range of download and print card buildings, the latest of which is a stone built warehouse that would be perfect for my wharf location, especially as I could modify it to form the basis of the low relief buildings at the back.
