I've been thinking of ways to make a setrack shunting layout fit into a four by one foot space without looking too cramped or limiting the operation too much. These photos show how tight clearances could be and how tight the radii of the curves often were in small goods yards, let alone on industrial or private owner yards, so I think I can get away with it on a layout. I think the trick is to hide the sections that look unrealistically tight and use curves with a wider radii on the bits that are obviously visible.
